Under A Moody Weather Waterfall, Skutafoss, Iceland

For some reason, I have developed a niche in landscape photography, particularly capturing landscapes from inside caves. This photo was taken in Iceland as we travelled south and east toward Vestrahorn/Stokknes, featuring a waterfall called Skutafoss.

The shot was spontaneous and not part of my planned list, which is quite rare for me. The morning before, we had been photographing the famous Vestrahorn, and on that day, the rain was pouring down heavily.

Before travelling to Iceland, I received a few tips about this location, and the hotel manager also recommended it. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a set of less impressive waterfalls. However, hiking further up the river revealed an incredible view of twin waterfalls cascading over a large cave.

Most photographers shoot above the cave, focusing on the mountain landscape. However, because it was overcast that day, I decided to position my wife near the mouth of the cave and captured some ‘compression shots’ that I really liked. Additionally, I ventured inside the cave to photograph the scene from within, aiming to create a dreamy and moody atmosphere by slowing down the water. Using a variable neutral density (VND) filter and an ultra-wide-angle lens, I took this long exposure shot. The photo was captured in 2022 and received a Bronze award from the IIC, Season 9.
