Bryce Canyon National Park in southwest Utah is world famous for its vast array of eroded sandstone rock formations, known as hoodoos. Many of the formations, such as Thor’s Hammer, and the trails, such as Wall Street, have fanciful and descriptive names.

Given the amazing variety of these hoodoos and the way in which their colour changes during the seasons and the time of day, capturing the essence of this special place in one frame can be a challenge for photographers. The potential compositions are literally endless.

This early fall morning, I was struck by the gorgeous light on the hoodoos, seen from one of the vantage points at the top of the canyon. I tried several compositions to display the repeating patterns in the hoodoos offset by the softer edges of the ridgelines and a scattering of trees.

My goal was to simplify a complex scene with repeating elements and variety in textures and colours in a pleasing composition. I hope I succeeded.
