This picture was captured in the Albert Family Community Forest, a tributary of the Kinderhook Creek in Rensselaer County, New York. My Canon EOS M6 Mark II effortlessly handled the contrast, and the convenience of composing and shooting the image with my phone allowed me to avoid lying on the ice and rocks while getting the shot. Thanks to Hudson Taconic Lands, a local conservation group, this Forest, along with over 15,000 acres in the rugged hills of east-central New York, has been preserved.

The land is conveniently located just a short and beautiful two-mile gravel road drive from the state highway. The best time to visit is during the winter after a couple of weeks of nice, cold weather. The stream where I took this picture is an ideal spot for ice photography. It features a 100-foot drop in elevation within just 3/4 of a mile, and the creek is narrow, rocky, and shallow. The water is easily accessible throughout this section, making it a must-visit for photographers who enjoy capturing water in both its liquid and solid forms.
