My friends and I went to Horseshoe Bend to see and photograph the sunset. We arrived well before sunset, so we could get settled in and scope out the best location for photos. The main viewing platform was quite crowded, but the extensive cliff edge offered many opportunities for getting away from the crowds.
Like many natural formations in the southwest USA, the scale of the bend in the Colorado River is difficult to capture in a single picture. So, the trick was to find a good location to capture the sunset, while emphasizing the natural beauty of the scene.
In this picture, the setting sun is lighting the canyon wall at the left of the photograph, and the clouds are reflected in the river below.
