Capturing this photo from the Kikarin a Eggini viewpoint in the Faroe Islands was a bit frightening. I timed my late-October visit for mid-morning so that the sun would be directly down the coast and still low on the horizon, backlighting the cliffs.
However, as I walked up to the viewpoint, a gale-force wind threatened to knock me over, intensifying my fear of heights. Fortunately, there was a small viewing platform with a low railing at the cliff edge, which gave me some reassurance that I would not be blown off the cliff.
I clutched my camera tripod with one hand and made a series of manually bracketed exposures with the other. I exposed for the highlights and greatly underexposed the darker foreground, then retreated from the edge and the roaring wind. After I returned home, I dodged the foreground and reduced the highlights somewhat during processing.
