The Painted Hills are a part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon and from a photographers point of view probably the most interesting.
In one of the areas it is possible to walk through the red hills on footpaths to see the red surface up close. The footpath also provides an interesting contrast to the red earth and also adds leading lines through the area that can be incorporated in the composition of an image. Actually it's almost impossible not to use them because the paths are quite dominant.
I chose a rather minimalistic approach with this image, only using a few lines from the hills and the path as the focal point.
