I started to think about this picture when scouting along Mahtesh Ramon canyon. This is my favourite place for night photography because of exceptionally clear desert air and relatively low light pollution enabling great visibility for the stairs. I noticed interesting rock outcrop at the canyon turn pointing exactly south, where Milky Way arch touch the earth. This rock looked like a good candidate for the focal point when illuminated by raising Moon. The rest was all about planning and defining the exact date when the MW rise is followed by the moonrise and spaced by enough time to make a dark sky and showcase the MW in all its glory. The Stellarium application was a great help for this. It took me 2 hours drive and 1.5 hours walk from the parking lot to arrive early enough to get some light and set my tripod for proper composition I pre-visualised earlier. I used my favourite astro lens Nikon 20mm/f1.8 for the sky on iOptron astro tracker exposed for 4 minutes and stopped down to f2.8 to keep the stars round. Then I changed my lens for 14 mm to catch the wide expanse of the canyon and wait another 1.5 hours for the moonrise. Back home and blend everything together.
