I took this image in 1990 on Kadachrome 64, along the southern bank of the Merced River in Yosemite while scouting for a sunrise reflection of El Capitan. While I don't consider the image among my best work, it is a long-time favorite because it evokes a vivid memory of why I love photography; the quiet, thoughtful search for subjects among natures beauty and the slow, contemplative approach to capturing the light and the moment.

I had started the day at 4am, hoping to find a good location and some solitude. Yosemite during the winter is magical; the scenery is wonderful, and the summer crowds are gone. That particular morning was exceptionally quiet. No cars, and no signs of humans; only me and a recent set of coyote tracks.
