Interview With Ben Horne

Known for his wilderness photography on film, Ben Horne has proved himself as a gifted artist creating visual life out of nature. Tiffany Reed Briley talks to him about formats, personal goals and how to have a successful YouTube channel.

Hey Ben! It is such an honor to have the chance to interview you and hear about your journey in and through photography. Let’s get started with your background. Can you share with us where your journey begins?

Ever since I was a kid I have enjoyed being outdoors and going camping. We took a family trip from San Diego to Montana and back when I was probably 6 or 7 years old. It was on that trip that we visited many great national parks across the west, including Zion, Yellowstone and Glacier. I remember being on a family hike in Zion while a thunderstorm rolled through the park. I can still remember the sound of the thunder as it echoed off the massive canyon walls. That left a lasting impression.

My interest in photography began in high school when I took a beginning black and white film photography class. It was around that same time that digital cameras were coming onto the market. I rode the digital wave for quite a few years and enjoyed working with a variety of new and exciting cameras, but I felt like there was something missing from my work. A friend suggested that I buy a large format view camera. It seemed like an odd suggestion at first, but I decided to give it a try.
