It was a cold December day in Bend, Oregon. I was above Dillion Falls on the outskirts of town. A light snow had fallen recently. I stood on the rocky overlook waiting for sunrise to materialize. When it didn't and the sky retained its gray pre-dawn color I searched for other compositions. I saw this tree. Against all odds it somehow found a way to put down roots on the end of a fallen tree trunk suspended out over the Deschutes River! Amazed it had survived I decided it deserved my attention. Using a long lens I isolated it from the its surroundings. I wanted the viewer to appreciate the harsh conditions this little tree was enduring. So, to make the image a bit more dramatic I used a long exposure allowing the water beneath it to surge and splash. The result is an image of a little tree trying to survive in extreme conditions.
