All the creative prowess in the world comes to nothing if you are unsure or hesitant over a few basic photographic principles. It is important to grasp them – if only so you can learn how to bend a few yet still create an appealing image. Your knowledge should be twofold in that you need first to understand the rules, and then to produce them on your particular camera!

Standing in a field while it is windy, or, worse still, raining, is no place to familiarise yourself with your equipment. Opportunities will be missed and any frustrations will reveal themselves in your final pictures. It is far better to…
