Are you still searching for your personal vision? The thing that sets you apart from other photographers? Rafael Rojas suggests you shouldn’t. Keep reading to find out why

Many photographers sooner or later have an existential crisis about the idea of having or not having a personal vision that is clearly recognisable and displayed for all to see in every single one of their images. Personal vision is like true love: when you look for it, you never find it. Like love, personal vision cannot be found, because it is already there, waiting to be unearthed. In fact, the opposite is truer. When you look for things that you already have, you move away from them.

The first suggestion I can make to all those photographers wanting to find their personal voice is to forget about it altogether. By letting go of the need to find your personal vision, you stop obsessing about photography as a means of obtaining something in the end, and you start thinking about photography as a means of obtaining something in the process. This mental switch in your head, from goal oriented to process oriented, will automatically bring peace of mind and a much deeper sense of joy during the practice of photography. You can only let your vision seep through your work when you let your subconscious float over the rational and logical thinking that serves us to navigate through life. The subconscious is where the souvenirs, experience and deeper convictions settle, creating who we really are. These grounds of coffee are buried by our rational thinking, the ego, the idea we have of ourselves and the cultural templates of the society where we live.
