Book Review: Digital Exposure Handbook

David Hay reviews this revised edition of Ross Hoddinott’s guide to digital exposures, which has been illustrated with the author’s own exceptional photographs. The question is, is it worth the purchase?

Exposure used to be one of the most critical steps when making film images. The preferred film of many landscape photographers was Fuji Velvia, which had very little exposure latitude. Anything more than 0.3 stop off the correct exposure meant the transparency had to go in the bin. Now, with the greater exposure latitude of digital files and the ability to adjust the exposure later, do we need to know how to get perfect exposures?

The book is divided into six chapters covering topics such as the basics of exposure, exposure in practice, ambient light, flash light, filters and exposure in the digital darkroom. Each topic is explored in great detail, with the extensive knowledge of the author coming across clearly in his text. His writing style is factual and accurate but easy to assimilate. Most of the specific terms used in the book are described in more detail in separate text boxes. Short exposure tips are also dotted throughout the book at regular intervals.

The quality of the illustrations featured in the book is exceptional. Having such an extensive back catalogue of personal images meant that there was no need for the author to pad out the book with inferior images or fill in the gaps with stock imagery. All the images are ...
