Book Review: The Photographers Guide to England’s Icons

These four photographic guides to different parts of Britain were written, researched and produced by Ellen Bowness. In an already crowded market of photographic guides to the same areas, how do these ones stack up against the other titles that are available? David Hay has the review

The Photographers Guide to Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and London

Each volume is just over a 100 pages in length and fits conveniently into your pocket or camera bag. Unlike the rival books, the author made the conscious decision not to include other sections, such as basic photographic techniques and composition. I support this decision as these location guides will probably be used by photographers who already have this sort of basic photographic knowledge and will want more location specific information at their fingertips. Her decision means that the books are smaller and lighter than the competition and they are packed, from front to back, with more relevant location information, rather than generalised technique advice.

Each volume covers over 50 top photographic locations in the target area. She has visited all the locations herself, several times, and has included some of her own photographs in the books. However, the majority of the illustrations are ...
