The Sniper, the Technician and the Butterfly

Most of us know that there are many photographic styles and many different ways that people choose to adopt when expressing themselves via photography. David Hay asks, what type of photographer are you?

I take my best photographs when I am alone. I can wander off in any direction, searching for the most interesting light or the most striking subjects, without having to worry about losing touch with others. However, when I go out photographing with other people, I am often struck by how different our photographic styles are.

Three of us go out sometimes to photograph different locations. We will be driving along when the call goes out: ‘Stop the car, there are photographs here’. When the car comes to a halt, two of us go off in one direction while the other one goes off in exactly the opposite direction. We have each seen …
