Every now and then, when I publish a photograph on a social media site or present a lecture to a photographic club, I unhappily receive a certain kind of reaction from some fellow photographers. I may have shown what I consider to be a very personal photograph, one of those images which happens in magical moments when mind, heart and soul unite, allowing us to photograph what we feel, not what we see. I may have talked about what triggered my reaction, about memories and feelings, hidden messages and visual metaphors, or I may have presented the photograph with a mere title and date, allowing it to speak directly to the observer.
