Get Up Early, Stay Out Late

What is the true meaning of the word photography (φωτογραφία)? I should really know this, being born in the country that invented the word. Of course I know, it means paint with light, or draw with light. Light is the source that supplies our pictures with contrast, shape and body, and often the best light is that which appears at either end of the day when the sun is lower in the sky.

I highly recommend getting up very early and staying out till very late, although some might say that there is not much light at this time. I am talking about the time that light starts illuminating the sky, or when it almost stops doing so if you wish. I know, it might be really hard to compose and focus at this time, especially in the morning but trust me, it is worth it.

Some of us leave the location as soon as the sun dips below the horizon. I always stay and wait for at least forty minutes beyond that. Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I don’t.

This picture was taken during one of those early mornings. Had I decided not to go out due to the non favouring weather forecast, I wouldn’t be showing it to you today.
