White Sands of New Mexico is the world's largest gypsum dune field and one of the world's greatest natural wonders. It is rare to find gypsum sand, especially almost pure gypsum sand, in the form of dunes (mounds of sand piled up by the wind). Although the dune field existed for thousands of years, White Sands became protected as a national monument in 1933 and became an American National Park in 2019. The park covers 145,762 acres in the Tularosa Basin. Toads, road runners, and more than 600 species of invertebrates call this protected land their home. Photographing in White Sands is special, especially because of the overall color palette. Its a favorite location of many photographers for landscape photography.
