I took this image in a local cemetery in London in late February, during the third national lockdown in England. It was a sunny day and the early blooms which provide assurance that the brighter days of spring are on their way had started to appear, so I went out for my daily outdoor exercise with my camera.
I had intended to photograph the snowdrops and crocuses so took my macro lens and a bin bag to lie on. I filled a memory card and was on my way home when I noticed the beautiful pink cherry (I think) blossoms on this tree. They were quite high up and I only had the one fixed focal length lens with me. That meant I either had to expose for the sky and recover the shadows in post-production or expose for the blossoms and let the sky turn white (being careful not to clip the highlights). I experimented with both but, in the end, preferred the high key look of the latter. I used a relatively shallow aperture to isolate the closest blossoms, letting the focus fall off through the image, and a higher than normal ISO as I was handholding my camera.
I processed the image in Lightroom to accentuate the high key look, raising both the shadows and blacks. Mother Nature provided the necessary saturation.
All in all, it was a very productive lunch hour!
