The weather on the central coast of California can be difficult to judge given the various weather patterns of the Pacific Ocean. Often you'll head out to the coast in wonderful conditions only to find the coastal area itself is shrouded in a marine layer (fog). With this is mind I set out with little expectation of good conditions but safe in the knowledge the dog would at least enjoy the walk. As I arrived at the location the marine layer was light but starting to lift so we headed up to the cliff tops to set up for the shot. The light was subtle and so I decided to go for a long exposure in order to maximise the colours and give the capture a dreamy feel.
Since this was early December the day was rapidly coming to an end but each exposure showed more and more promise as the marine layer faded. I played around with various shutter settings and while shorter ones gave greater emphasis to the flow and ebb of the tide the lack of movement and interest in the sky detracted from the overall image. Eventually an 8 minute exposure brought the scene to life best and provided a nice mix of texture and colour and the gaps in the cloud and fog allowed the setting sun to warm up the cliff sides giving it a complementary warmth.
