LeConte Glacier, a 21-mile long glacier in Alaska, is the southernmost active tidewater glacier in North America. There are many tidewater glaciers at the heads of Alaska's many bays along the Inside Passage, but LeConte Glacier ranks at the top for most beautiful. LeConte Glacier has been relatively stable though recently it is now melting more quickly. The melting causes icebergs to break off the face of the glacier. Photographing the narrow passage to the head of LeConte Bay, a gorgeous fjord, surrounded by high mountains, forest and shrouded in fog, when it is filled with icebergs, many times with seals and seal pups on them, is dramatic and an unforgettable experience.
