Thames is an old coastal gold mining town, and the wharf was one of many constructed to help transport both goods and people across the Firth of Thames to the city of Auckland and beyond. In its heyday, the wharves were busy hubs of the local community. However, the Firth slowly silted up, forcing the wharves into disrepair and the boats out of business. Now what's left stands as an echo of a bye-gone era and is a beautiful place to contemplate the hustle and bustle of what once was as the sun slowly settles across the waters to the west.
