After a night frost of several degrees below zero, most water basins have a nice layer of ice, especially the shallow ones. There are all kinds of forms to be seen: circles, ripples, the lot. Sometimes, as in this image, it is like a mad artist has gone wild with a pencil on paper. The result: a tangle of lines, , curves and curls, like Kadinsky or a Boisvert in black and white. I always wonder how this seemingly random course of lines is created—a secret of Jack Frost.
