I shot this image in the hamlet of Les Rousses (elev. 1400m), not far from my house in the Massif des Ecrins, southern French Alps. The only difficulty was in coaxing the wind to push the chimney smoke upwards and across to the right, which I believe provides the necessary, surreal appearance. Out of twenty two attempts this is the one capture that achieved the desired result I’d previsioned. I plan to shoot this same composition in the coming months, when there’s a meter or more of snow on the ground.
