Lewis Hine was educated as a sociologist at the University of Chicago. He continued his education at New York and Columbia Universities, and taught at the School of Ethical Culture. Paul Strand was one of his students and it was Hine who introduced him to photography. Lewis Hine was over thirty years of age when he took up photography.
He soon realized that, if he wanted his images to contribute to social change they must first touch the senses of the viewer. In his images, one can see the love and respect for those who were called the common people. Today he is considered more of a social reformer than a photographer.
Lewis Hine was considered a master of what was at the time a new camera, the one we know today as large format.
A timely reminder of how things were. We must ensure that these conditions do not return in the pursuit of welth.
